T-Post: Issue #44: “Death Penalty Economy Measure”

April 30th, 2009

T-Post: Issue #44: "Death Penalty Economy Measure"

Death Penalty Economy Measure

Quite a few American states now consider ending the death penalty. The reason? Well, it seems that killing people cost too much.

T-Post: Issue #44: "Death Penalty Economy Measure"

Martin O’Malley, Governor of Maryland, is cited in New York Times (February the 24th, 2009) stating that capital cases cost three times as much as homicide cases where the death penalty is not sought. Capital cases are expensive because the trials tend to take longer, require more lawyers and more costly expert witnesses. They are also far more likely to lead to multiple appeals.

It’s hard not to let the sarcasms sneak into one’s discourse when economy measures is on the table with regard to something as serious as the institutional taking of human lives. For, what conclusion is exactly to be drawn from this? Particularly interesting here is the rhetoric. Because this suggests that the death penalty is a commodity that can not be afforded in economically restrained times.

Design By David Foldvari

This issue was designed by one of our favourite illustrators at the moment – David Foldvari. David is a Hungarian who’s spent most of his life living in the UK.

I was going to tell you a bit about his work but it all sounded so cliché. Dark humour, Eastern European roots, amazing craftsmanship, bla bla bla. Let’s put it this way instead: if you’re interested in seeing the work of one of the most influential and talented illustrators around, go to his website. The illustrations will speak for themselves.

Christopher Raeburn

April 25th, 2009

Christopher Raeburn

Christopher Raeburn explores a dual design vision in his debut womenswear collection.

Presenting a concise range of beautifully functional outerwear garments constructed from original military parachute
fabrication, the designer pays homage to the idea of ‘future heritage’ by duplicating each design in pure, black, British wool.

Christopher Raeburn

Shadowing each silk parachute garment with its own heavy wool counter-part results in a thoroughly modern capsule of contrasting weights, silhouettes and textures.

Christopher Raeburn

A skilfully resolved, dual layer olive green parka, integrates seaming and cords from the original parachute to showcase the military functionality that Raeburn so carefully respects. Features such as a poppered shower-proof zip front and wind resistant pockets,
mean the objective of the original vessel remains true.

Christopher Raeburn

A fully reversible cape and fishtail coat are testament to the fine attention to detail that Raeburn demands in all his garments. Inverting autumn gold against olive green parachute and over-dyed “:Scheertarn” snow camouflage against black wool produces a
dappled autumnal colour palette.

Christopher Raeburn

A cropped quilted bomber jacket, featuring a hand embroidered circular quilting pattern mimicking Swedish digital snow camouflage netting is a highlight of the collection. The zipped hood detail and the elegantly adjustable poppered cuffs again reflect Raeburn’s
contemporary, urban outlook.

Christopher Raeburn

Also featuring a poncho, hoody and sprinter jacket, Christopher Raeburn’s A/W09 collection considers traditional construction techniques adapted for modern lifestyles.
