Elena Gallen

About

Author, screenwriter-director, artist and researcher. Educated at Blanquerna-URL School of Communication in Barcelona, she attended film school courses at NYFA Los Angeles and ECAM in Madrid. Her work has been showcased at MoMA PS 1 as part of the New York Art Book Fair, European Culture Congress, Sprint Milano or the Center for Creative Communications (CCC) in Japan, to name a few.

Excelling for her self-initiated oracular projects and deeply tied to the arts, culture and fashion industries, a gaining recognition acknowledged Gallen as one of Spain’s high-profile creatives in her early 20s. Gallen was a judge to prestigious ADG Laus Awards and a professor at Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) Fashion Comm Masters. In 2014, her cross-media project Sacred Geometry was featured at Longing for Tesla exhibition in BWA Wrocław Gallery (Poland) as part of the European Culture Congress. She has edited artists’ books, co-curated and designed a multi-channel video-art installation Girls! Why did you decide to start a band? at MUSAC Contemporary Art Museum of Castille & Leon in 2016, reflecting on gender bias within the music industry.

Gallen has lectured at cultural centers La Casa Encendida, Fundación Mapfre or CentroCentro in Madrid. Most recently, she expanded her writing background at GenZ and Millennial platform, Freeda, with a focus on diversity. But her writing is best known for her first non-fiction book, El Diablo es una mujer (Lunwerg, 2021), a film theory essay that restores the myth of the femme fatale. Gallen’s experience in movie making, includes work as production designer of Spanish-French documentary Oscuro y Lucientes (Tourmalet Films, RTVE, Marmita Films) and award-winning horror short Disco Inferno, both known for their sleek aesthetics. As far as comercial work as both art director & filmmaker, her clients range from Universal Music Group, CANADA, Reebok, CAMPERLAB, Meliá Hotels International to 080 Barcelona Fashion week.

Gallen’s methodology derives from a spectrum of disciplinary artistic fields and her corpus of work reflects her commitment to contribute to a though-provoking creative landscape and a broader discourse on gender representation, opening avenues for rethinking established paradigms. After optioning the rights to her first book, she’s in development of a doc-series with CDMX-based production company Anónima Media, led by actress and producer Eréndira Ibarra (Sense8, Matrix Revolutions). Gallen is writing spec screenplays, including biopic Garbo (8 on The Black List, 2nd rounder at Sundance Development Track 2023) and supernatural horror coming-of-age Les Malignes. ︎︎︎ Variety.com
