Matheus Lopes Castro (aka Mathiole)

Matheus Lopes Castro (aka Mathiole) is a 25 year old guy, who's been working with art and design since he was 15.

Matheus opened up to us saying "It's my biggest passion and I feel very fortunate to be able to work with something that pleases me so much. I have big plans for myself in the future. Hopefully I'll be able to fulfill my expectations and get things done. I don't want to spoil it, but it's a dream of mine to have my own t-shirt brand. I have everything planed but it will take a lot of time to complete, the way I see it in my head. I'll let you know!"

Here's what else Matheus had to say when we interviewed him...

When did you start taking art seriously?

I guess it was when I first study art, when I was 14, I started a comic course that opened my eyes to what would be my greatest passion.

If you go by one, where did your nickname, or “nome de plume” come from?

It was just a fun way to call my name, Matheus. There isn't actually a meaning for that.

How would you best describe your style?

I think it's a lucid, imaginative, surreal and positive style concept wise. Aesthetically, it's a blend of colors, imprecision and experimentation.

At what age did you develop this style?

If I remember it right, it was when I was at college, so I was 21, I guess.

Who or what are your artistic influences?

René Magritte, Salvador Dali, Roy Linchenstein, Andy Warhol, Ashley wood, Takehiko Inoue, Eishiro Oda, Akira Toryama, James Jean, Jeremy Gedes and many others.

Do you look at this type of art as business or just a hobby?

For me it's both, it came as a hobby, then turns out to be my business, which is awesome!

Do you have any business experience?

I have some entrepreneur experience, for two times I try to open my own t-shirt business and I failed for a lot of reasons. But I've learned a lot from those failed companies and I'm on the process to start another one. This time I'm associated with two great friends who are also talented artists. We've opened an studio and we're almost set to launch our first t-shirt collection, stay connected! The studio name is Verso, you can find us at www.verso.us.

What motivates you in life?

Mostly, my friends, I'm nothing without them. I also have a lot of goals in my life, those things keep pushing me forward.

Are you single, married, or have a significant other?

I have someone, it's not actually a girlfriend neither friends with benefits, is something between that, haha, its kinda hard to explain but it's a good relationship. I don't see myself marring on the near future. I'm still young and I fell like I need to party real hard before abandon this lifestyle

Do you have a preference for screen printing or DTG (Direct-To-Garment) printing?

Screen printing. Its looks more legit to me, and is old school!

Mac vs. PC?

Pc, Mac is overpriced and too mainstream to me.

Favorite clothing brand?

Threadless.

Do you engage in physical activity (work out, yoga, martial arts?)

I work out, but it doesn't really work out for me haha I've gone to gym since I was 18, yet I'm still a skinny guy. My favorite activity, as you could expect coming from someone from Brazil, is soccer. I play at least once a week

Do you cook?

Yes! Just basic stuff, but I do enjoy! I just hate washing the dishes.

Are you a vegetarian or vegan?

Absolutely not. I'm carnivore, but I respect those who are vegetarian or vegan, as long as they respect me (which is kind of hard to happen).

What languages are you fluent in?

Portuguese, of course, and I'm trying to be good at English. At this time I think I'm good with interpretation, listening and writing, but when it comes to speaking it, I still feel that I have a lot to practice
