Dave Perillo: T-Shirt Designer - Graphic Designer - Illustrator Interview

T-Shirt Designer, Graphic Designer and Illustrator Dave Perillo was born in 1974, the same year Wham-O introduced the Slip N’ Slide.

In 1st grade, Dave revealed in his autobiography “Me Book”, that when he grew up he would like to be Ziggy. This ambition was deflated by 2nd grade when he realized that A) Ziggy is not real, B) Ziggy is completely bald, and C) Ziggy wears no pants. While the thought of going throughout life sans pants was somewhat appealing he decided to pursue his second choice, a career in art.

His t-shirt designs have appeared on Teefury and Threadless among others and he draws inspiration for his work from many of the following sources: 1950’s Sci-Fi Movies, Charles Schultz, Jim Flora, Ray Harryhausen, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Henson, Hanna Barbera, The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock & Character Advertising Icons.

Dave currently resides in the burbs of Philly, works as an illustrator, believes that bowling is the sport of kings and a bag of Swedish Fish is a seafood dinner.Dave was willing to share with us some more insight on his art and life style. Here's what he had to say...

Where did your nickname-“nome de plume”-screen name come from?

My screen name "Montygog" was the name of a cartoon character I use to draw when I was in high school. He was a small man who lived in a can and worked at a photomat with his friend named Nacho. He collected sea monkeys.

How would you best describe your style?

I've heard it call modern vintage, which is really an oxymoron.

What are your influences?

Jim Henson, Hanna Barbera cartoons, Ed Emberley, Jim Flora, Mary Blair, vintage advertising to name a few. I recently discovered the works of artists Daphne Padden and Tom Eckersley who did some amazing mid 20th century travel posters.

Do you look at this as a hobby or a business?

Started as a hobby that now has evolved into a business.

Single, married?

Married.

Do you prefer screen printing or DTG?

Definitely screen printing.

Mac or PC?

Mac.

Do you cook?

Not well, but yes.

Do you eat meat?

As much as possible.

What languages do you speak?

English and broken English.

Do you play any instrument?

I use to play the drums, more recently the ukulele.

Music: Who are you listening to now?

My iPod is full of everything. I dig old punk like the Clash, the Jam, Ramones but i guess more recent bands would be things like Arcade Fire and the Bravery.

TV shows?

Just finished watching every episode of Breaking Bad, best show I've ever seen and this comes from a guy who owns every season of What's Happening on DVD.
